Summer vacation 2005
Summary of our vacation
Well, here we are, back from a months worth of traveling SE Asia and we've got stories to tell! These pages will be full of fun facts about our trip, tips and pics, where to go and where not to, what to do and Wat (sic) to avoid. We've had an excellent summer vacation traveling all over and even though the mileage done has taken its toll on us, we still haven't seen as much as we'd liked. There is so much more to see and explore. We were hoping to make it to Vietnam this trip, but the amount of time we would have spent there and how much it would have cost in visas and days traveling just didn't hold its weight by the end of the trip, so we decided to cut it out. So have a look around, read about the different places we checked out for all to hear about and see. Hope you enjoy, though you must go there yourselves and see it and take it all in.
Larger Picture Files!
I've included large picture files to all of my photo albums, so if you want to download them to your computer or even print them off, you'll be able to get a good copy. So once you've click on the thumb nail picture, (usually the small one) a bigger one comes up to give you a better look. If you click the larger picture an even bigger file will come up on your computer screen. If you want to download a picture, I recommend downloading the larger picture. It should come up on your computer fine once downloaded. The internet is usually displays a low resolution for speed purposes, so you might have to be a bit patient with the larger files.
Enjoy the Search!
The internet in SE Asia doesn't seem very good even at its best (even Thailand, which is surprising as they seem to be industrializing quite quickly and not too far behind Korea. After visiting these countries, Korea now seems so civilized and when we first arrived here it seems so distant to what we were used to in Vancouver.
A Comparison
All three countries we visited were an awesome experience with really nice people. Although the countries were all different when compared to each other, the one interesting observation we had was that the people all seems happy despite the condition of life they were living or how unfair they were treated by those who held the power or money. Thailand is much more like our western society than either Bali or Cambodia. Although it does still hold an exotic charm of Buddhism and tuk tuks, there are many shopping malls and it seems very materialistic. The country on the other hand seems to be a bit withdrawn from this city life which was nice to experience. Bali was also similar to Bangkok in that Kuta, the main tourist town, was full of expensive items in the shopping malls, but also had the cheap markets just outside. Bali outside the touristy places, which are too few, seemed fairly poor. One could only assume most of the industry there is tourism. Cambodia on the other hand was very third world. Only a few people had nice cars, the government was fairly corrupt, which is no different to any other country, but because it is such a poor country, the people take the brunt a bit more. One good thing about Cambodia is their lack of foreign or corporate influence and no fast food which was nice, not even in the cities! Landowners and other elite drove Toyota Land Cruisers usually.
